A year in Bristol

Today is my feast day, here is the full story (in French) of Saint Sebastien and a brief summary in english, for your personal culture!

"Sébastien serait originaire de Narbonne,où une église qui lui est dédiée a été construite sur le lieu présumé de sa maison natale. Son martyre daterait de 287 ou 288, sous l'empereur Diocletien. Pourtant Dioclétien avait beaucoup d'estime pour le soldat Sébastien - on prétend même qu'il fut son amant ! - et l'aurait ainsi nommé capitaine de sa garde pretorienne. Mais, chargé au départ de traquer les chretiens, Sébastien avait fini par adopter leur foi et se comportait même comme un dangereux prosélyte. Dioclétien donna donc à ses soldats l'ordre de l'exécuter en le transperçant de flèches, ce qui fut fait aussitôt. Selon les textes et l'iconographie du Moyen Age. Le saint, couvert de flèches, ressemblait à un véritable hérisson. Mais les soldats, qui avaient beaucoup d'estime pour leur chef, auraient évité de viser le cœur, si bien que Sébastien ne succomba pas à ses blessures. Soigné par une jeune veuve nommée Irène, il reprit suffisamment de forces pour se rendre auprès de l'empereur et lui reprocher sa cruauté à l'égard des chrétiens. Dioclétien le fit alors rouer de coups jusqu'à ce que mort s'ensuive, et ordonna que son corps soit jeté dans les égouts. Guidés par une vision de Sainte Lucine, les chrétiens purent cependant retrouver son corps et l'ensevelirent auprès des restes des apotres."

The last episode of shanghai in this blog is devo ted to the traditional and old city of shanghai. Located in the middle of the city, the old city symbolizes the  past greatness of the chinese empire. Pagodas, lions  and dragons are everywhere, reflect ing the great and beautiful chinese architecture. The contrast between the old and the new cities is striking, especially when we went to the Yuyuan garden, this famous classical garden located inside the old city. The garden was finished in 1577 by a government officer of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) named Pan Yunduan. Yu in Chinese means pleasing and satisfying, and once inside you understand why...

Here are pictures of Pu dong, the new city and financial district., especially of the Jin Mao Tower.  The Jin Mao tower is the 4th highest tower in the world, 420,5 meter high, 88 floors, and an observatory which gives you a marvelous view over the new city and the old, if the weather is clear. Dominating the fast growing quarter of Pu dong, the Jin Mao tower host various financial companies and the Hyatt Hotel, which reception is at the 56th floor. From the obervatory, you can have a diving view over its main reception, hard to stand if you have vertigo like i do....
Pu dong reflects well the chinese fast modernization, bulding activity there is impressive, i wonder  how it will look like in 10 years....
